A new drug that treats acid reflux, called Nexium, could save patients and the emergency room.
The drug could increase the frequency of esophageal reflux, a symptom of heartburn, by as much as 20 percent.
The Food and Drug Administration said it hopes the drug can also relieve some patients with GERD, as well as people with ulcers, and that it has other indications, including prevention of ulcers.
The new drug, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is not yet approved for use by the FDA for short-term use. The Food and Drug Administration said it expects the drug will become available in the second half of next year.
In the study, researchers recruited 2,500 patients over a period of one year, between June 2010 and June 2013. They analyzed data on their health status, symptoms, medical history, and other medications used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Patients took an average of 8.6 milligrams (mg) of the drug, about half the usual dose.
Dr. Andrew Leuchter, clinical director of gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., said the drug was effective for many patients, especially those who had experienced problems such as ulcers or reflux.
He said patients in the trial had a variety of symptoms such as heartburn, stomach discomfort, heartburn with acid reflux, ulcers, and heartburn lasting several days.
"The number one concern with the drug is the risk of ulcers," Leuchter said.
Patients also had a variety of other symptoms such as heartburn and gastrointestinal problems such as constipation, diarrhea, and constipation. In the study, he said, patients also had a variety of other health problems such as hypertension, high blood pressure, and cholesterol.

Heartburn is the most common type of stomach ulcer in the U. S., affecting more than 5 million people annually.
The most common form of acid reflux is ulcers, which can form on the lining of the stomach, ulcers in the area of the stomach, or elsewhere in the body, such as in the ears, eyes, and throat. Other types of ulcers include perforations or ulcers on the skin, and can affect the esophagus, stomach, or intestine.

The study was led by co-author, R. J. Hirsch, PhD, professor of health policy at UC San Diego Medical Center, who had worked at San Diego-based San Diego Health for more than a decade before enrolling in the study.
“Nexium control of acid reflux medication can help patients avoid long-term stomach damage, which is often a major problem,” Hirsch said.
Erythema can also be a symptom of a serious condition that can cause serious damage to the esophagus, such as esophageal cancer. If it happens, acid reflux medication may need to be avoided or limited to prevent stomach damage, Hirsch said.
“We’re seeing a lot of new information on the efficacy of Nexium control of acid reflux medication in patients with heartburn, which could help people who may be at risk for this problem to see more options,” Hirsch said.
“We’re also working on new research to better understand the long-term health benefits of using Nexium control of acid reflux medication. This could potentially extend to reducing the risk of long-term heartburn,” he said.
“We believe that this new data could help doctors and patients make more informed decisions about the management of acid reflux and other gastric issues,” Hirsch said.

The Food and Drug Administration said on Tuesday it will approve the use of a drug that was developed to treat acid reflux disease.
The drug has been approved by the agency. It is not expected to be marketed.
The new approval is in addition to an FDA-approved drug to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, known as erosive esophagitis, the agency said.
"We have several new drugs in the pipeline," said Janet Woodcock, who co-chairs the committee for the agency's clinical trials, which were held in September.
